Pope Francis appoints new bishop for Fairbanks, Alaska
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Saturday appointed the Rev. Chad Zielinski the new Bishop of Fairbanks, Alaska. The bishop-elect is a priest of the Diocese of Gaylord, and currently serving as a military chaplain at the Air Force base in Fairbanks. 

He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and served in the military in the mid-1980’s. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Gaylord (in Michigan) on June 8, 1996, and since 2002 has served as an Air Force military chaplain.

Now for the news on a disaster that hit Alaska on Saturday & is headed toward the lower 48:

An explosive storm that is more powerful than Hurricane Sandy battered Alaska's Alutian Islands on Saturday, lashing the remote region with 96mph winds and 50-foot waves. The remnants of Typhoon Nuri, believed to be one of the most intensive storms to ever hit the North Pacific, struck Shemya, an island on the region's far Western tip, in the early hours of the morning. More than 120 people were forced to lock themselves indoors for safety, while ships and fishing vessels were led out of the storm's path and into protected harbours. And the storm is only set to wreak more havoc - with forecasters expecting cold and icy air, snow and temperatures as low as -34C (-30 degrees Fahrenheit) to sweep across the U.S. next week. The weather will feel more like that experienced in January than in November, said Tom Niziol, a winter weather specialist for The Weather Channel.
