(Vatican Radio) Following the Angelus on Saturday, Pope Francis turned his attention to the victims of Wednesday’s tragic explosions in the Chinese city of Tianjin. “My thoughts go out, in this moment, to the people of the city of Tianjin, in northern China, where several explosions in an industrial area have caused numerous deaths and injuries, and extensive damage.” The Holy Father assured them of his prayers for all those who had lost their lives or who were suffering on account of the disaster. “May the Lord give them comfort and support to all those engaged in relieving their suffering.”
Next Twin Typhoons Headed To China Later This Week:
Just one week after Typhoon Soudelor raked Saipan, Taiwan, Japan's Ryukyu Islands and southeast China, the tropical western Pacific has recharged with a pair of typhoons.
To the west of Guam and Saipan is Typhoon Goni, which could threaten parts of east Asia late this week. Goni has already affected Guam and Saipan as a tropical storm with strong winds and heavy rain Friday-Sunday. Now The Dangerous Chemicals On The Ground That Could Turn Into Toxic Gas Clouds If It Rains:
Chinese officials face a race against time to clear toxic chemicals from the site of the Tianjin warehouse explosion, amid fears the blast may have released hundreds of tons of toxic gas into the air.
Soldiers have joined rescue workers in gas masks and hazard suits in the port city where the death toll from Wednesday’s massive explosion has risen to 112. Another 95, the majority of whom were firefighters, remained missing.
Officials confirmed the warehouse where the blast occurred was used to house more than 100 tons of sodium cyanide, a potentially deadly substance.
The presence of the chemicals was confirmed by Shi Luze, the chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army's Beijing Military Region.
